12,417 get into universities

A total of 12,417 students, out of some 18,200 whose Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination results met the minimum university entry requirements, will be admitted into bachelor's programs at nine local universities, Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) announced on Thursday.

The number of admitted students is 200 more than last year.

Some of 5,800 students who failed to gain enrolment went to the Haking Wong Institute of Vocational Education in Cheung Sha Wan on Thursday morning to apply for the institute's two-year higher diploma courses.

More than 42,609 took the examination this year. Of them, 37,884 applied through the JUPAS.

Social network guide for officers

The police plan to introduce a guideline for officers' use of social network websites, said Commissioner Andy Tsang Wai-hung at a meeting of Central and Western District Council on Thursday.

Commenting on inappropriate posts on social network websites by police officers, Tsang said a policeman needs to follow a code of conduct in both the real world and the cyber world.

He also said the police plan to roll out the electronic fingerprint system in 2013. It will replace the current method of using ink to record fingerprint images.

DC member sued for fraud

Member of the Eastern District Council Manuel Chan Tim-shing and his assistant appeared in Eastern Magistrates Court on Thursday to face four charges of fraud.

Chan, 52, and his assistant Jackie Ng Siu-lin, 44, were indicted on four counts of fraud for allegedly cheating the council of HK$1.7 million in allowances and operating expenses during 2000-2010.

The Independent Commission Against Corruption said the money was actually used to hire the assistant.

No plea was taken. The case will be transferred to the District Court. The next hearing was scheduled on Aug 16.

The two defendants were released on bail.

Two nabbed for online fraud

Police have arrested two men in connection with online auction scams involving more than HK$160,000.

A 31-year-old man, believed to the mastermind, was arrested in Wong Uk Tsuen, Yuen Long, and a 23-year-old in Hung Hom. They were suspected of selling concert ticket and amulets in online auction websites. But buyers were unable to contact them after transferring money to their bank accounts.

At least 23 victims, aged between 10 to 50, fell for the trap, losing up to HK$20,000.

Suicidal man run over by train

A man was run over by a train after he jumped from a platform in MTR's Sha Tin Station around 10 am Thursday.

He was certified dead by paramedics at the scene.

Police detected no suspicious circumstances and concluded the death was a suicide.
