Man jailed over chase with police
A 28-year-old man who led a car chase with police to avoid arrest over driving under influence of drugs was sentenced to 40 months in prison in the District Court Thursday.
Chan Chin-Pang, who earlier pleaded guilty to charges including dangerous driving and drug trafficking, was also disqualified from driving for five years. The court heard that Chan tried to speed away when police approached his car, parked at a Kwai Chung dock late at night on January 24. The speed of his car exceeded 70 kilometers per hour during the ensuing chase. When finally cornered by several police vehicles, he rammed into one police car in a desperate move, resulting in injuries to two officers. Then he attempted to set himself on fire inside the car. Police later found cocaine and ketamine in his car.
Maid pleads to infanticide
An unmarried Filipino maid who gave birth to a baby in her employer's home and threw the newborn out a window pleaded guilty to one count of infanticide in the High Court Thursday. Sentencing was adjourned to Monday.
Gonzales Cherry Ann Carranza, 29, was arrested after the body of a baby boy was found dangling on a clothes rack at an apartment building in November last year. Under caution, she admitted to have tossed the newborn out a window because she didn't want her employer to find out.
3 teens arrested over ditched baby
Two boys and a girl were charged with preventing the lawful burial of a body for ditching a plastic bag containing a newborn baby on a Sheung Shui hill on October 6.
Police received a report at 8 pm on October 6 that two boys carrying a plastic bag were seen acting suspiciously on Wah Ming Road. A plastic bag with a newborn baby girl was found in the vicinity. And the two boys were arrested at the scene.
A 17-year-old girl, the girlfriend of the one of the arrested boys, was also arrested in Sai Kung early Thursday morning. She was believed to have given birth to the baby at home.
Man with 6 knives arrested
A man holding a chopper and a sword was arrested in Central early Thursday.
The 36-year-old man, in an agitated state, was arrested when police officers investigated a noise complaint in Tin Hon Lane around 5 am. Aside from the chopper and sword in hand, he was also found to be carrying two choppers and two knives. He was eventually subdued and taken to hospital for examination.
Student loan fraud busted
Police have arrested 10 men and two women, aged 21 to 49, for suspected student loan fraud involving $3.1 million.
In early September, officers received a report of suspected false loan applications relating to the Non-means-Tested Loan Scheme involving two private education centers in Yau Ma Tei. The two centres offered courses and conspired with students to make false loan applications to the Student Financial Assistance Agency between June and August.
Officers arrested nine students - seven men and two women, and three men who were directors of the education centres, for suspected conspiracy to defraud.
