Orphans to attend hero's funeral
The four orphans rescued by Wong Fuk-wing, a volunteer at the orphanage where they live, have been given visas so that they may attend the Hong Kong man's funeral today.
Wong died in the Qinghai earthquake in an effort to save more orphans. Wong's family said family members will not speak at the funeral because they prefer a low-key funeral, in keeping with Wong's character.
The funeral will be held in the Universal Funeral Parlour in Hung Hom in the afternoon.
Doctors told to list charges
The Medical Council of Hong Kong has called on doctors to list itemized charges for their patients.
Council Chairwoman Felice Lieh-Mak said a letter sent to physicians is meant to clarify a court decision related to doctors' charges. She said the requirement, aimed at improving transparency, is currently only a reminder and will be discussed by the council before being written into the Professional Code of Conduct.
Unlicensed driver given jail term
A transport worker who drove his employer's truck without a license and killed a man while speeding was sentenced to three years in prison at the District Court Wednesday. Wong Siu-man, 26, is also disqualified from obtaining a drivers' license for five years.
The court heard earlier that Wong asked a colleague to let him drive their employer's truck on the way home on August 27, 2009. He had driven barely 300 meters before losing control of the vehicle and striking a road repairman. The victim died of his injuries. Investigation showed the accused held a learner's permit that had expired months earlier because the man failed a road test.
Groper gets community service
A 28-year-old man was ordered to undertake 240 hours of community service at the District Court for committing lewd acts with 13-year-old girl.
The court was told that Kwan Ka-ho, who pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent assault last month, had a date in April last year with a girl he met online. They fondled each other in the stairs of a mall on two different occasions. The girl boasted about her sexual experience with a teacher, leading to the arrests of three men, including Kwan. The prosecutor said the other two are expected to stand trial in August.
Presiding judge Lam Kar-yan said the case was controversial because the girl was willing and apparently had no regret afterward.
HKU assistant purloined funds
A former administrative assistant of University of Hong Kong (HKU) pleaded guilty to charge of misconduct in public office for spending HK$3.2 million on the university's credit card without authorization at the District Court Wednesday. The woman was remanded in custody until sentencing on May 20.
Chan Sau-hung, 41, used the credit cards entrusted to her to purchase HK$1.65 million of goods and withdraw HK$1.45 million in cash between 2004 and 2006. Her supervisor alerted the Independent Commission Against Corruption upon discovery.
In mitigation, Chan's lawyer said Chan acted foolishly to alleviate pressure from her relationship with her abusive husband, who is psychotic. All her purchases were gifts to her family members, rather than for her own enjoyment. Chan has also returned HK$2.7 million by selling her flat and her Mandatory Pension Fund portfolio.
