Malfunction in both engines
Director General of Civil Aviation Norman Lo Shung-man confirmed Wednesday that both engines of an Airbus A330-300 malfunctioned when the Cathay Pacific flight made an emergency landing at Chek Lap Kok airport Tuesday.
Cathay described the situation as one engine idling and the other "responding abnormally" during a press briefing Wednesday.
Of the eight passengers injured in the evacuation, only one remained hospitalized.
Francis Ng fined for assault
Well-known actor Francis Ng Chun-yu pleaded guilty to a charge at Kowloon City Magistrates' Court of assault causing bodily harm. The charge arose from a bakery scuffle in which he injured another man. The judge showed leniency in ordering the actor to pay a fine of HK$10,000.
Also known as Francis Ng Chi-Keung, the 48-year-old actor had pleaded not guilty to the charge of wounding in a court appearance in February.
According to the court record, Ng visited Ceres Boulangerie et Patisserie in Kowloon City with his wife on January 1. His wife got into an argument with another customer, Ming Chi-hong, in the bakery. Ng punched Ming, causing a head injury requiring sutures.
Guard sentenced for gold theft
A guard employed by the security transport company, Brink's Hong Kong has been sentenced to 18-month imprisonment for stealing four bars of gold bullion from a company safe.
Lai Pak-hui, 27, had earlier pleaded guilty to four counts of theft at the Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Court. The court heard that Lai was one of the guards escorting 290 bars of gold bullion belonging to HSBC, to the Brink's safe in Kwai Chung in September last year. In February this year Lai's supervisor found two bars missing.
After he was confronted by the supervisor, Lai confessed to having stolen altogether four bars of gold bullion, valued about HK$267,000 each. He said he stole because he wanted a luxurious lifestyle.
Tutor pleads guilty to assaulting child
A UK man pledged guilty to charges of indecent assault at the District Court Wednesday for molesting a 5-year-old girl he had tutored. Presiding judge Stanley Chan ordered psychological and psychiatric reports.
The Court heard earlier that Harris Nigel Russell, 43, was hired as an English tutor for the victim between July and September last year. The girl told her grandmother that she didn't want to take lessons from him. When the girl was questioned the crime was discovered.
Russell was remanded, pending sentencing on April 28.
Funding for village relocation
The Public Works Subcommittee of the Legislative Council Wednesday approved HK$51.3 million to fund a project related to the Liantang-Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point.
The project includes infrastructure improvement to the relocation area for Ta Kwu Ling's Chuk Yuen Village, which will be forced to relocate to make way for the new control point. A parcel of land amounting to about 2.2 hectares will be assembled. An existing access road of about 360 meters long will be improved and a 1-meter-wide stream diverted.
