HONG KONG: Malaysian pop singer Gary Chaw Ge appeared in court Friday to answer for a street brawl with Canto-pop artist Justin Lo Ting-wei outside a Hong Kong nightclub last September.

The appearance of Chaw on an assault charge at the Eastern Magistrates Court took on a circus atmosphere as the singer was greeted by throngs of paparazzi.

Inside the courtroom, Chaw came away nearly unscathed, bound by an order that he be on his best behavior while in Hong Kong.

Back outside, Chaw again apologized to Lo, their families, friends, fans and the media. "I accept the decision of the judge and I need to be on probation for a lifetime. I hope this mistake will become a bad example for young people," he said.

Chaw had earlier said he will seek professional help for his drinking.

Justice Anthony Yuen gave Chaw a binding over order under which charges will not be brought provided Chaw does not reoffend or commit any other crimes over the next 12 months.

Based in Taiwan, Chaw was arrested last October. He was released on bail and ordered to report to police.

Chinese reporters witnessed the altercation that erupted outside a Central bar and continued on Admiralty Street. Lo, whom Chaw describes as his "sworn brother", is also godfather to Chaw's son.

The pair was seen outside Peel Fresco Music Lounge, a popular live music bar, on Peel Street around 1 pm September 23, according to reports.

Footage of the fight allegedly showed the pair arguing before Chaw pushed Lo to the ground and kicked him.

Leaving the area in a taxi, the two stopped at Admiralty and Chaw was seen alighting after kicking someone inside the cab.

Chaw then picked up a road sign and threatened Lo before the two were parted by their entourage.

The two apologized for their antics the following day, with Chaw saying he had "made a serious mistake" while Lo said their actions were "wrong and ugly and a very stupid thing to do."

Common assault carries a maximum penalty of one year's imprisonment.
