Elected in January 2007, Tim Lui is one of the 36 Hong Kong-based Deputies to the National People's Congress (NPC). Among the local deputies are 11 new faces, with most of them being the cream of society who are relatively younger and possessing higher academic and professional qualifications.
But the status of being a member of the country's highest legislature has not brought him any convenience in his business activities or helped him expand his company's mainland network.
"I have drawn a fine line between my position as an NPC and my business. I never deliberately tell people I am an NPC deputy, although I have included this title in my name cards. Similarly, I did not run for the NPC election for the sake of promoting my company's business activities," he said.
Being a national legislator with a professional background, Lui said it is necessary for him to look at matters from a broader point of view.
"Last year, I made a written proposal on the development of accountants, including but not limited to accountants from Hong Kong, to promote professional development in China," he revealed. He also submitted proposals on taxation,
measures to tackle the financial tsunami, opening of private hospitals and the ways to lift the quality of the people.
