Ambitious steps

Kaohsiung residents practice the Taike Dance in a park in the southern port city yesterday. Riding on its success in showing off an innovative temple fair dance at the opening of the Kaohsiung World Games 2009, the Kaohsiung City government is now planning to promote the dance at the world-renowned Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the biggest arts festival in the world.

The temple fair dance involves "Seven-Star" steps that used to be danced by Taoist deity sedan-chair carriers during religious festivals and is accompanied by loud traditional temple tunes and dazzling neon lights.
