CE honors Prof Harry Fang for his public service
Chief Executive Donald Tsang yesterday expressed his deep sadness at news of the death of Professor Harry Fang Sin-yang. "Professor Fang was one of the most public-spirited persons that I have known. He was highly respected for his extensive and outstanding public service, in particular for his invaluable contributions to social and rehabilitation services," Tsang said. Fang had served as an unofficial member of the Legislative Council and the Executive Council. He was awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal in 2001.
East Asian Games torch relay route set out
The Hong Kong 2009 East Asian Games (EAG) Torch Relay will be held Saturday. The torch relay will start at Kowloon Park Piazza at 3 pm, passing through Austin Road, Nathan Road, Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui, across Victoria Harbour to Expo Drive East, Harbour Road, Expo Drive to end at the Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai. Major roads such as Nathan Road, Salisbury Road, Austin Road, Harbour Road and Convention Avenue in Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai North will be closed during the relay.
Man fined for refusing to complete health form
A 21-year-old man was fined HK$500 by the Fanling Magistrates' Court for refusing to provide his address and contact information on a health declaration form when entering Hong Kong through Shenzhen. The magistrate said the law requiring that the form be completed is intended to protect public health, and travelers have the responsibility to provide information even though they may have privacy concerns. The magistrate said the law is necessary, especially given that Hong Kong has experienced the SARS crisis and the human swine flu outbreak.
Crackdown on drunk driving, 10 arrested
Police carried out territory-wide random breath tests between August 21 and August 24, arresting ten drivers for drunk driving related offences. Nine of those charged were found to have blood alcohol exceeding the legally prescribed limit. They will face charges. Offenders are liable to a maximum fine of HK$25,000, three years' imprisonment and assessment of 10 driving-offence points.
