Investigation launched into exploding battery

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) and the Customs and Excise Department are investigating how an officer was injured in the eyes and face when a battery exploded Sunday. The battery exploded while it was being recharged. It was manufactured by Camelion, a German brand. The Hong Kong agent, APower Holdings, is following up with the EMSD and the manufacturer in Shenzhen. The Consumer Council said they receive about one or two complaints every year about mobile phone batteries overheating while being recharged.

Tenants protest chain store

Some 15 tenants of Block 12, Pak Tin Estate, Sham Shui Po, held a half-day strike to protest a Housing Department decision to rent a vacant premise to a chain convenience store. Yan Kai-wing, the Sham Shui Po district councilor helping the tenants, said business in the public housing estate has been severely affected by the financial crisis and the aging population.
