HKIEd to open courses for the elderly
The Hong Kong Institute of Education will open a series of undergraduate courses for the elderly in the coming academic year. There will be 12 undergraduate modules for students aged 60 or above, including teacher education, the legal system, philosophy, personal development and Cantonese opera. The tuition for each module is HK$200. Admission to the undergraduate modules will be on a first-come-first-served basis since the number of places is limited. The deadline for applications is August 20.
Employer fined over death of worker in crane mishap
Hongkong International Terminals Limited was fined HK$30,000 at Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Court yesterday for violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance. The case involved a fatal accident at Kwai Chung Container Terminal on June 11, 2007. A company employee fell to his death while working on a jib crane. According to the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance, employers are required to maintain a safe working environment for every employee.
Ngong Ping 360 set for 6 weeks closure
Ngong Ping 360 has reminded visitors that its cable car service will be temporarily closed for about 6 weeks starting August 17, while the company undertakes scheduled maintenance on the ropeway. The date for resumption of service will be announced when the maintenance work nears completion.
Iron bars for woman who attacked maid with hot iron
A woman who attacked her domestic helper with a hot iron has been sent to jail for four months. Kwun Tong court heard that Chan Mei-ying, 51, attacked her maid with an iron after complaining that the maid had set the heat too high while ironing clothes. Chan told the court she had been suffering from depression arising from pressures of taking care of her family.
Children allegedly stabbed for disturbing neighbour
Two Pakistani youngsters aged 12 and 18 suffered stab wounds when attacked by a man in their flat in Tin Yuet Estate, Tin Shui Wai, yesterday. A resident of the estate said the two youngsters were playing basketball and running in the flat, creating a disturbance. Police allege that a man living in the flat below the two children entered the suite where the youngsters were playing, picked up a kitchen knife and attacked them. The two victims were admitted to Tuen Mun Hospital. Police called the attack an isolated incident.
