Mainland talents blossoming: Survey
A survey by the Hong Kong Association of Mainland Graduates reveals that the number of mainlanders in Hong Kong studying or working under the Admission Scheme for Mainland Talents and Professionals increased substantially between 2006 and 2007. In 2006, the number of mainlanders entering the city under the scheme totalled 14,066, while in 2007, the figure jumped to 20,141.
Govt issues travel alert for Turkey
A government spokesman yesterday urged Hong Kong residents who plan to visit Turkey to pay close attention to the situation there. In view of current conditions in Turkey, the spokesman urged Hong Kong residents who are already there to make provisions to ensure their personal safety and to endeavour to avoid places where there are large gatherings of people. The spokesman made the comment after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged Chinese citizens in Turkey to be alert because Chinese people and organizations there have received threats recently.
Police foil HK$1.3 million robbery
Police prevented an armed robbery targeting a businessman, who was carrying HK$1.3 million dollars in cash. A gang of thugs set an ambush for the man, unaware they were themselves under surveillance by police. Police refused to disclose the identity of the intended victim. The gang, armed with weapons, waited for the businessman at a fast food restaurant near his office. Police said they learned of the plot in June and had been following the gangsters' movements since. Police identified them as triad members.
