CE heads to Beijing next week

Chief Executive Donald Tsang will visit Beijing from Dec 17-19 to brief central government officials on the latest economic, social and political developments of the SAR.

Director of Chief Executive's Office Norman Chan, Director of Information Services Betty Fung, Private Secretary to Chief Executive Kenneth Mak, Information Coordinator Andy Ho and Senior Special Assistant to Chief Executive Chan Kin-ping will accompany Tsang.

Chief Secretary Henry Tang will be Acting Chief Executive during the CE's absence.

HK, Guangdong sign water supply deal

The Hong Kong SAR and Guangdong have signed a new agreement for the supply of Dongjiang water to the city, guaranteeing a stable and flexible supply until 2011.

Secretary for Development Carrie Lam signed the agreement in Shenzhen yesterday with Huang Boqing, director general of the Department of Water Resources of Guangdong province.

There will be flexibility in the daily supply rate to tie in with local seasonal fluctuations.

Man, 64, uses knife to scare off police

A 64-year-old man has been sentenced to 120 hours of community service for intimidating tobacco control inspectors and possessing offensive weapons.

The order was issued at Kwun Tong Magistracy yesterday. The defendant was also fined HK$1,000 for the smoking offence. He was found smoking in a non-smoking area by inspectors in Wong Tai Sin Lok Fu Shopping Centre on Oct 31. He refused to cooperate with the officers when asked to provide his personal particulars and then brandished a knife.

10-year-old boy sick from melamine-tainted milk

A 10-year-old boy in Tze Wan Shan, Kowloon, is suffering from renal stones that may be related to consumption of melamine-tainted milk products. The Centre for Health Protection said yesterday he had consumed milk products and biscuits bought from a local market.

The center's hotline 2125-1133 operates from 9 am to 5:45 pm weekdays for people who have consumed milk products contaminated with melamine or are experiencing renal symptoms.
