Short-term food handouts to start in early '09
The government announced yesterday a short-term food assistance service expected to be implemented by early next year, pending approval from the Legislative Council's Finance Committee.
The HK$100-million program was announced by Chief Executive Donald Tsang in July to provide aid to the needy, including those who do not benefit from any government relief measures. The food assistance will help at least 50,000 people for six weeks.
Job fair offers 2,100 jobs in mainly catering, retail
The Labour Department will hold a job fair at Metro City Plaza Wednesday, offering more than 2,100 vacancies at 23 firms.
The companies, mainly from the catering and retail industries, will set up counters. Vacancies available include shop supervisor, cook, waiter/waitress, shop assistant, sales, customer service officer and security guard. The department will conduct on-the-spot registration for job seekers.
HKSAR passport holders still need visas for Brazil
Holders of Hong Kong Special Administration Region passports still need a visa to enter Brazil because the agreement between the two governments on the exemption of visa requirements has not yet come into force, the Immigration Department said yesterday. The Brazilian Consulate General has agreed to put in place some special interim arrangements. Those who have already departed for Brazil will be allowed to enter without a visa.
40-year-old estate to get HK$45.8m facelift
The Housing Department will spend HK$45.8 million on renovations at Kwun Tong's Ping Shek Estate to preserve it for another 15 years.
The department has completed a comprehensive structural investigation of the estate and found all seven blocks to be structurally safe. However, structural repair and improvement works will have to be conducted in various locations.
