Emergency scenario hones spill-cleanup efforts

The Marine Department conducted a joint exercise in the waters off Tsing Lung Garden in Tuen Mun yesterday to test the response and efficiency of government departments and oil companies in handling spills.

The emergency scenario is that a tanker carrying 3,000 tons of oil starts taking on water after its cargo tanks were damaged. As a result, more than 100 tons of oil spill into the sea at a rate of 30 tons an hour.

4 year old's infection brings EV-71 total to 88

The Centre for Health Protection said yesterday it had confirmed an Enterovirus-71 infection case involving a 4-year-old boy living in Yuen Long, which brings the year's total to 88.

The child came down with a fever Oct 28. He was taken to Tuen Mun Hospital the next day and discharged Monday.

He has no travel history, but his brother has symptoms of hand-foot-mouth-disease. Four boys and a girl, aged 4 to 5, at the day center the boy attends had displayed similar symptoms.

Construction sector seeks more mainland relations

Secretary for Development Carrie Lam has relayed the local construction industry's wish for further co-operation between Hong Kong and the mainland at a meeting of the Ministry of Housing & Urban-Rural Development.

She met with Vice Minister Qi Ji in Nanjing yesterday and told him that the new initiative allowing Hong Kong-qualified urban planners and supervision engineers to register to work in Guangdong was warmly welcomed by the local construction industry.

Credit card stealers to be sentenced Nov 13

A District Court judge yesterday delayed sentencing until Nov 13 of two men found guilty of fraud by buying HK$80,000 worth consumer goods with illegally obtained credit cards. The defendants were arrested in 2006 when they bought mobile phones with stolen credit cards.

In asking the court for a lighter sentence, the defense lawyer said his clients had mended their ways since their arrests two years ago and paid back all the money they owed the card-issuing banks.

Phony Bank of China website targets customers

The Monetary Authority has issued an alert on fraudulent website www.bochkcn.org, which looks similar to the Bank of China (Hong Kong) official website.

The bank has stressed that it has no connection with the site.

The second biggest lender in Hong Kong, BOC has been targeted through several malicious attempts to obtain customer information.
