Legislator assault case adjourned
The man arrested for attacking legislator Lee Cheuk-yan Saturday was arraigned at Tuen Mun District Court. No plea was taken and the case was adjourned until Nov 10, pending psychological evaluation of the suspect. The man was remanded in prison custody.
The suspect was charged with common assault, assault causing bodily harm and vandalism.
The government condemned the assault on Lee Cheuk-yan and expressed its sympathy to the lawmaker Saturday afternoon.
Mainlander jailed for immigration scam
Sha Tin Magistracy yesterday sentenced a mainlander to 16 months in jail for using an illicit one-way permit.
Wu Yichao, 36, was the adopted son of a Hong Kong resident. To apply for a one-way permit from mainland authorities to settle in Hong Kong he falsely claimed he was the natural son. In August 2001 Wu was granted permanent stay in Hong Kong on the strength of the one-way permit.
He pleaded guilty to one count of using an unlawfully obtained travel document on October 24.
HK$1.8m in aid given
to Tai O residents
About 550 applications for emergency financial assistance from Tai O residents affected by the September 24 flooding have been processed, and more than HK$1.8 million has been disbursed to them.
Responding to residents' complaints about a lack of government help the Home Affairs Department yesterday said prompt and continued action has been taken. The Islands District Office ran a temporary shelter for residents in need and engaged electricians and invited volunteers to repair damaged power installations.
Cable TV complaint rejected
A Broadcasting Authority investigation has found Hong Kong Cable Television did not engage in anti-competitive conduct in the pay-TV market through its service termination practices last year.
In May PCCW Media alleged Cable TV acted to prevent, distort or substantially restrict competition by hindering or inhibiting its Barclays Premier League subscribers from terminating their service arrangements with the broadcaster last year.
