German poultry imports suspended
The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) said yesterday it had suspended the processing of applications for importing poultry products from Germany. The decision came after confirmation of a case of H5N1 avian influenza on a poultry farm in the country. Hong Kong has imported about 1,400 tons of frozen poultry meat from Germany since April. Meanwhile, the melamine test results released by the CFS yesterday showed that all 78 samples of food items were fit for consumption.
Cab drivers protest over new fare scheme
About 200 taxi drivers staged a protest by refusing to take on passengers at the airport yesterday afternoon to show their discontent over a recent government decision to raise fares for short journeys but slash those for longer trips.
Newly-arrived travelers were given directions as to where to find other means of transportation by the Airport Authority at the terminal. The protest was called off shortly after 6 pm.
