Melamine found in EDO Pack almond biscuits
The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) yesterday released the test results of another 79 food products, of which only one is deemed unsafe. The test found melamine in a batch of EDO Pack Almond Cacao Biscuit Sticks (Net weight: 36g).
The amount of melamine found in the biscuits is 8.5ppm. The legal limit for melamine in the biscuit sticks is 2.5ppm.
A CFS spokesperson said the biscuits in question are labeled "Best Before 17.5.2009" and retailers as well as importers had been told to recall them immediately.
Travel alert issued on viral hepatitis
The Centre for Health Protection urges travelers to viral hepatitis endemic areas to be vigilant after the confirmation of six sporadic cases of hepatitis-A involving children who recently traveled to Pakistan.
Four boys and two girls aged seven to 12 came down with fever, vomiting, abdominal pain and jaundice September 5 to October 1. They sought treatment at public hospitals and are stable. A 12-year-old boy is still being treated at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Four hotel staff jailed for bribery
Four former hotel staff were given two-month jail terms yesterday for accepting bribes for referring guests to a tailor shop, and ordered to pay HK$1,000 each in restitution to the hotel.
Wong Hing-cheung and Yeung Wing-wai, both former Marco Polo Gateway guest relations agents, and Cheng Chi-chiu and Leung Siu-ho, both former bell captains of the hotel, pleaded guilty at Kowloon City Magistracy to one count of conspiring to accept advantages.
1.2 tons of silver bars seized off Sai Kung
Marine Police intercepted 1.2 tons of silver bars worth about HK$4 million onboard two speedboats early yesterday in Rocky Harbour (Leung Shuen Wan Hoi), Sai Kung. No one was arrested in the rare bust.
The authorities said at a press conference later in the day that it was the first of such haul in three years and they will try to find out their intended destination. The silver ingots have the English word China and some other markings engraved in them.
