Melamine tests show satisfactory results

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) published yesterday the results of safety tests on 110 dairy products.

No melamine was found in any of the items which included milk powder, soy milk, cheese and cream.

A CFS spokesperson said the center had so far tested some 50 samples of milk powder, including those for adults and pregnant women, and the results had all been satisfactory.

The CFS is to publish the results of tests on more food items today, such as chocolates, nutritional supplements and cream soups.

10% jump in mainlanders visiting Hong Kong

The Tourism Board said yesterday more than 481,000 mainland residents visited Hong Kong during the weeklong National Day holiday, an increase of nearly 10 percent from last year.

Of these visitors the number of people traveling under the Individual Visit Scheme saw a leap of about 70 percent over the same period last year, while that of mainlanders who came with tourist groups grew by 14 percentage points.

Tourism Board Chairman James Tien commented that mainland residents' interest in traveling overseas grew after the Beijing Olympic Games.

6 arrested over Oct 2 Tin Shui Wai murder

Police have arrested six men in connection with an October 2 murder in Tin Shui Shopping Centre. They were arrested across the New Territories October 3 to 5.

A 25-year-old man was attacked by a gang of men in a restaurant in the Tin Shui Wai mall at about 3:55 am. The gang fled and the victim died in Tuen Mun Hospital Sunday night. A post-mortem examination will be conducted Thursday.

The case has been reclassified murder from wounding. The arrestees, aged 15 to 21, have been released on bail pending further enquiries.

10-year-old tourist treated for cholera

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) yesterday confirmed an imported case of cholera involving a 10-year-old tourist.

The boy came down with vomiting and diarrhea September 28 before arriving in Hong Kong last Wednesday. He was admitted to Tuen Mun Hospital the next day and is now stable in Princess Margaret Hospital.

This is the fourth cholera case this year. Three were recorded last year.

The CHP reminded people of observing good personal, food and environmental hygiene to prevent the disease.

Two killed in separate road accidents

Police are investigating a Tai Po traffic accident in which a 59-year-old man died yesterday.

He was hit by a bus driven by a 54-year-old man while crossing On Chee Road about 5 am yesterday. He suffered serious head injuries and died at Prince of Wales Hospital at noon.

In a similar tragedy, a 29-year-old van driver was arrested after his reversing vehicle ran an 81-year-old woman down in Ma On Shan yesterday.

The accident happened at about 2:25 pm. She was later certified dead at Prince of Wales Hospital.
