HK woman, mainland man get life for murder last year

The High Court Friday sentenced a local woman and a mainland man in absentee to life in prison, after finding them guilty of murdering a woman and obstruction of her legitimate burial.

The two, 51 and 32 years of age, murdered the victim in June of last year at the request of the woman defendant's boyfriend, who had had a financial issue with the victim and wanted her dead.

The two dumped the body in a manhole in Stanley, Island East, where it eventually began to stink and was brought to the authorities' attention.

Repairmen strike seeks to reverse overtime cuts

About 60 employees of Thyssen Kruppe Elevator who went on strike in protest against the reduction of overtime hours met with representatives of the company's management yesterday, with member of the Legislative Council representing social workers to try and end the standoff.

The company is responsible for the repair and maintenance of more than 2,000 elevators and escalators in Hong Kong. Some workers said their basic salary was only around HK$8,000 and they need the overtime pay to make their monthly income reach HK$18,000.

Lady accused of pregnant

stabbing appears in court

A 26-year-old woman appeared yesterday at Fanling Magistracy for wounding a pregnant woman on Sept 16 with intent to murder, allegedly out of jealousy after her own miscarriage.

Leung Sin-ting was arrested and charged with stabbing the woman with a knife and strangled her neck with electric wire at home. The injured woman has been discharged from hospital, but her prematurely born son is still in serious condition due to brain swelling.

The case is adjourned to Nov 7 for further investigation.

Dengue fever found in Kowloon man, 42

The Centre for Health Protection has confirmed the year's 32nd imported case of Dengue fever, involving a 42-year-old man living in Sham Shui Po, Kowloon.

He travelled to Thailand Sept 18-21 and came down with fever and aching joints Sept 27. He was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital Sept 28 and discharged on Thursday.

There were 58 imported Dengue fever cases last year. People should stay alert and help prevent mosquito breeding.
