T1 signal up as Typhoon Hagupit picks up speed

The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) issued the No 1 storm signal at 6:40 pm yesterday as Typhoon Hagupit moved west-northwest at about 30 km per hour and entered the South China Sea. The storm was 670 km from Hong Kong as of midnight.

Calling Hagupit a relatively fast-moving and mature typhoon, the HKO said its center wind speed reached 160 km per hour and there is a chance the No 3 signal may need to be issued when the storm approaches the southern coastal regions, including Hong Kong.

Job fair at Olympian City boosts 2,600 openings

The Labour Department will hold a job fair at Olympian City tomorrow, offering more than 2,600 vacancies from 30 firms.

Twenty companies from the catering and property-management industries will set up counters and offer 2,000 vacancies for on-the-spot recruitment. Vacancies available include shop supervisor, manager, officer, cook, waiter/waitress, shop assistant, security officer, security guard and customer-service officer. Information on 600 vacancies solicited from 10 other companies will also be displayed.

Drug-prevention program to raise doctors' awareness

A special Beat Drugs Fund exercise to design a training program for general practitioners is open for applications until Nov 17.

Successful applicants must design and run a professional training program for family doctors, and produce a manual for them.

The training program will enhance family doctors' awareness and knowledge of the drug problem and the skills to screen, advise or refer drug abusers to proper treatment services, thus widening the community network for early intervention.

National education urged on China's 60th anniversary

The government will take the opportunity of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China to promote youth development and national education, Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing said yesterday.

Tsang said the government encourages non-government organizations to organize youth activities and national education programs to strengthen the public's sense of national identity.
