HK$18,000 drugs seized in TST coffee shops

Police have seized over HK$18,000 worth of illegal drugs, including cocaine and ketamine, in two upstairs bars in Tsim Sha Tsui over the weekend and arrested nine men and women aged 19 to 49.

A police spokesman said there has been a rise in drug dealing in upstairs bars since many discos in the district have shut down.

The police vowed to step up patrol in and around leisure facilities such as bars and karaoke lounges as the summer vacation draws near.

City to go lights out next Saturday

Environmental group Friends of the Earth plans to organize a one-hour lights-out ceremony at 8:30pm next Saturday (June 21) to raise energy conservation awareness. It expects more than 100 buildings to join the symbolic vigil.

Prominent buildings to join the act include World Financial Centre Phases 1 and 2, the Legislative Council and City Hall in Central, the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai and the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Four teens hurt in Tai Po group attack

Four youngsters aged 17 to 19 were taken to hospitals for various injuries after they were attacked near Elegance Garden in Tai Po, New Territories, yesterday. Investigation is ongoing.

One of the victims was listed in serious condition at Prince of Wales Hospital while two others were in stable condition. The fourth one suffered minor injuries and left for home on his own after medical attention.

Police quoted witnesses as saying six or seven men beat up the four at around 5am yesterday.

Quality time together best Father's Day gift: survey

A recent online survey of nearly 600 local fathers found 36 percent of the respondents spend two or three hours with their children daily on average, while 13 percent admitted they hardly have 30 minutes to be with their off-springs.

The survey was conducted by a website that promotes close parent-child relationship from mid-May to early this month and the results were released yesterday. Some 60 percent of the respondents said the best Father's Day gift is quality time with the kids.

55,000 Hongkongers suffer from ventricular fibrillation

The Hong Kong College of Cardiology said yesterday its calculations show a total of 55,000 Hong Kong residents are suffering from ventricular fibrillation, with such symptoms as irregular heartbeat (some up to six times faster than normal), frequent dizziness and breathing difficulty.

About 26 percent of them are in danger of such complications as hypertension (high blood pressure) and heart failure, while 10 percent also suffer from ischemic stroke and coronary heart disease.

Two injured in TST cab accident, driver arrested

A taxi driver was arrested yesterday morning for drink driving after he lost control of his vehicle in Tsim Sha Tsui and injured a Filipino woman and a 72-year-old Chinese woman on the sidewalk.

Police said the driver failed a breathalyzer test.

Both victims were taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment. The Filipino woman was unconscious on the way to the hospital while the other woman suffered head injuries.
