The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) yesterday requested an exemption from the building height restrictions in Tsim Sha Tsui so that it can proceed with its plan to build an innovation tower of over 70m tall to cope with the growing student population.

The current restrictions in the area limit building heights to 45m.

The university argued that the height restrictions should not apply to the institution as most of its buildings on campus are not tall and a few tall buildings will not create any "wall-effect".

The floor area of the tower, designed by internationally renowned architect Zaha Hadid, will have to be reduced from 15,000 to 12,000 sq m should the university fail to secure the exemption.
