One killed, 11 hurt in mainland traffic accident

A 26-year-old man died and 11 others were injured when a coach carrying a team of Hong Kong volunteers overturned on its way from Xilinhot to Hohhot, capital of the Inner Mongolia autonomous region. Three of the injured were in serious condition.

The World Emergency Relief (Hong Kong), a Christian group that organized the trip to Inner Mongolia for first-hand volunteer work experience in poverty-stricken areas, has asked the SAR government for help.

The group has contacted the family of the deceased and will arrange for those not seriously injured to return to Hong Kong for medical treatment today.

Cyber attacks worry more parents than young users

A survey conducted by the Baptist University from December 2007 to February this year found that parents are more concerned about their children being "attacked" on the Internet than the children themselves.

Findings of the survey showed that about 93 percent of the parents interviewed had such worry, compared to just 13.5 percent among the teenagers polled.

The survey also revealed that parents do not really know about their children's online activities, and 14.5 percent of the youngsters said their parents had allowed them to use their credit cards to shop or play video games online.

Lily Chiang fraud case adjourned until next month

The Eastern District Magistracy postponed until June 2 the hearing of a fraud case against Lily Chiang. The 46-year-old defendant is the former president of the Hong Kong-listed Pacific Challenge Holdings Ltd and the first chairwoman of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce.

The Department of Justice has rejected the defendant's request to refer the case to the High Court and insisted on trying her at the Eastern District Magistracy.

Chiang has objected to this decision and filed for a judicial review.

She was charged with share-options fraud in January.

City to ship construction waste to Guangdong

The Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) said yesterday it plans to ship a total of 10 million tons of construction throwaways to the mainland city of Taishan in the neighboring Guangdong province in August at an estimated cost of HK$700 million.

The CEDD explained that the move can extend the availability of Hong Kong's landfills in Tuen Mun and Tseung Kwun O to the first half of next year. The two landfills are expected to fill up later this year at the present rate of dumping.
