| Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region is briefly named Ning, with Yinchuan as its provincial seat. Located on “The Silk Road,” Ningxia was historically the important passage of transportation and trade between the East and the West. As a rapid developing economy, Ningxia’s has formed an industrial system with coal, electric power, metallurgy, machinery, textiles, paper-making and foodstuffs as the mainstay sectors. Agriculture is based on the production of grain crops, such as rice, wheat, sorghum and economic crops, such as maize and benne, cole and beet. Animal husbandry is based on the breeding of sheep, with leather and fur products from Tan Sheep and Shamao Goat well-known for their quality. Ningxia is also one of the important production bases of milch cow and beef cattle in the country. In 2008, Ningxia’s GDP totaled RMB 109.9 billion, ranking 29th in the country. The population of permanent residents in Ningxia is 6.1 million, with a per capita GDP of RMB 17,540. |
