The provincial seat of Shanxi province, Taiyuan is an important city of energy and chemical industry in the country with metallurgy, machinery, chemical industry, and coal as the mainstays and the main characteristic of outbound energy, raw materials and mining machinery. In 2008, Taiyuan’s GDP totaled RMB 146.809 billion. The population of permanent residents amounts to 3.46 million, with a per capita GDP surpassing RMB 42,427.

太原市，山西省省会，是以冶金、机械、化工、煤炭为支柱，以输出能源、原材料、矿山机械产品为主要特征的全国重要的能源重化工城市。2008年太原市生产总值（GDP）1468.09亿元，常住人口人口346万,人均GDP 超过42427元。

Taiyuan is rich in mineral reserves, mostly rich in coal reserves, with iron ore in second place and gypsum in third place in the country. 太原矿藏堪称丰富，在矿物资源中以煤蕴藏最丰，铁矿次之，石膏居三，石膏以其质地优良驰名全国。太原已经发展成为一个以冶金、机械、化工、煤炭工业为主体，轻纺、电子、食品、医药、电力和建材工业具有相当规模，工业门类比较齐全的现代化工业城市。国际煤炭与能源新产业博览会（简称国际煤炭博览会）从2007年起，每年定期在太原举行。
