As the provincial seat, Lanzhou has been a major commercial city and the tea-horse trade market on the Silk Road since ancient times. It is now developed into an important commodity distribution center in the west region. Lanzou has formed the industrial system of relatively full categories, with petroleum, chemical-making, machinery, metallurgy as four industrial pillars. It is one of the major bases for heavy chemical industry, energy and raw material production. In 2008, Lanzhou’s GDP reached RMB 84.628 billion, with a per capita GDP of RMB 15,051 against the permanent-resident population of 3.29 million.
兰州，甘肃省省会，自古就是“丝绸之路”上的商埠重镇和著名的“茶马互市”，现已发展成为西部地区重要的商品集散中心。兰州已形成以石油、化工、机械、冶金、四大行业等主体，门类比较齐全的工业体系，成为我国主要的重化工，能源和原材料生产基地之一。2008年全市实现生产总值846.28亿元，常住人口为329万，人均GDP达15051元。
With the opening of the New Eurasian Land Bridge, especially with the implementation of the West Development Strategy, Lanzhou has become even more prominent with its strategic position as the crucial channel for China-Western cooperation and exchanges and a major passage to central Asia, West Asia, the Middle East and Europe, and is playing an important role in connecting the east with the west, collaborating with the south in supporting the north. The building of a multi-level and normalized market system in Lanzhou is increasingly complete, with logistic service functions obviously improved, the flow of people, goods, funds, information relatively flourishing, and the structure of greater commerce, circulation and market initially formed, radiating 8 provinces, 4 million square kilometers and over 300 million people in the west region .
随着新欧亚大陆桥的开通特别是西部大开发战略的实施，兰州作为我国东西合作交流和通往中亚、西亚、中东、欧洲的重要通道，战略地位更加突出，正发挥着承东启西、联南济北的重要作用。兰州多层次、规范化的市场体系建设日益完善，流通服务功能明显增强，人流、物流、资金流、信息流相对活跃，大商贸、大流通、大市场格局初步形成，辐射面达西部8省区，近400万平方公里和3亿多人口。
