Chinese gymnast Xu Zhiqiang was on the winner's rostrum twice yesterday in the Capital Stadium but he got only one gold medal - one of the three collected by Chinese.

The Chinese national flag was raised and the national anthem was played as Xu was deemed the men's vaulting horse joint champion at the Seventh World Cup here in Beijing. But the judges later corrected the result and gave the gold to both Sylvio Kroll of the German Democratic Republic and Yuri Korolev of the Soviet Union. Xu got the bronze.

'I heard the correction announced," Xu said afterwards. But he said it did not bother him.

Xu, 23, performed his near-perfect gymnastics in the next event, the parallel bars, to win his first gold in a world tournament. He shared the gold with Valentin Mogilnyi of the Soviet Union.

"I was not the best in the allround two days ago and I am happy to win a gold in the individual event finally," Xu said. He finished sixth overall.

His compatriot Li Ning continued his gold-winning streak yesterday by taking the floor exercises and pommel horse, in which he scored the first perfect 10 in a men's event at the Seventh World Cup. Overall, Li, joint all-round champion with Korolev, had three golds.

But Korolev outshone him as he won the horizontal bar gold and shared the vault and rings golds to make his gold tally four here.

The biggest hero of the three-day World Cup, however, was Elena Shushunova of the Soviet Union. Shushunova, 17, won four of all five golds. The only gold that evaded her was that of the beam, which her compatriot Oksana Omeliantchik won.

The Romanian women thus didn't come up with a gold.
