'Twilight' leads the nominations for the 2009 MTV Movie Awards.

The teen vampire thriller has seven nods in six categories, including Best Movie, Best Female Performance for Kirsten Stewart and Best Breakthrough Performance Male for actors Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.

'Twilight' will go head-to-head on the night with 'Slumdog Millionaire', which is up for six accolades.

The two films will compete in the Best Movie category, while 'Slumdog Millionaire' lead star Dev Patel will battle Robert and Taylor in the Best Breakthrough Performance Male category.

Dev's co-star and rumoured girlfriend Freida Pinto is up for the Best Breakthrough Performance Female prize.

The other nominees in the Best Movie list are 'The Dark Knight', 'High School Musical 3: Senior Year' and 'Iron Man'.

One prize which sees 'Twilight' and 'Slumdog Millionaire' excluded is for the Best Male Performance.

Christian Bale - who played Batman in 'The Dark Knight' - 'Iron Man' star Robert Downey Jr., Shia LaBeouf, who is nominated for his role in Eagle Eye, 'Fast and Furious' actor Vin Diesel and 'High School Musical 3: Senior Year' star Zac Efron will battle it out for the gong.

MTV has also added two new categories for this year's awards - Best Song From a Movie and the Best WTF Moment, which will recognise the most outrageous scene from the last year's films.

Eminem has already been confirmed to perform at the ceremony and more acts will be announced in the coming weeks.

Winners in all categories can be voted for by the public online at www.mtv.com.

The 18th annual MTV Movie Awards will take place at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California, on May 31 and will be hosted American comedian Andy Samberg.
