Representatives confirmed the couple's nine month romance had ended last week, but Simpson refused to talk about the split during press interviews at the Cannes Film Festival in France.

But, upon her return to America Monday, it seemed the couple only had reconciliation in mind.
A guest who spotted Mayer leaving Simpson's suite at the Soho Grand tells In Touch Weekly magazine, "He was looking really happy. He couldn't stop smiling."

But a Simpson pal insists the couple has got some way to go before they start thinking about a long-term future together: "They definitely went on a date last night. She still loves him...but he's scared of commitment. He breaks up with her and then regrets it and then begs her to get back together."
