Recognizing outstanding achievement in professional theatre in the Greater St. Louis Area, The Kevin Kline Awards will be handed out March 20, in a ceremony hosted by Broadway's Jason Danieley, a St. Louis native.

Theatre artists and productions will be honored in over 20 categories. The awards are named in honor of St. Louis native Kevin Kline, the Tony and Academy Award winning actor, who will be in attendance and present six awards. Also presenting will be St Louis natives Ken Page and Rocco Landesman.

"I've long been under the impression that people didn't lend their names to awards until after they had died," Kline said in an earlier statement, when the awards were announced. "I'm in pretty good health right now, and feeling all the better for having received this lovely and unexpected honor. It's gratifying to think that I can continue to be associated with theatre excellence in the city where so many of my earliest theatre impressions were formed."

Like most resident theatre communities, shows are created by a mix of local and visiting talent. Among East Coast names nominated are actresses Andrea Burns, Georgia Engel, Natascia Diaz and Kate Baldwin, actors Ken Page, Nat Chandler and Nat DeWolf, musical director Ben Whiteley and director Rob Ruggiero, among others.

Indicating the health of the St. Louis theatre community, the Kline Awards boast a category for Outstanding New Play or Musical. The new-work nominees include Lee Patton Chiles' Dancing on Air; So to Speak, created by the Ensemble of Washington Avenue Players Project; and Margeau Steinau, B. Weller and Rachel Jackson's Famous Monsters.

A spokesman for the Kline Awards said the new works category was included to help encourage world premieres (or premieres of substantially revised works) in the community.

The first annual Kevin Kline Awards will be presented March 20 in the restored Robert's Orpheum Theatre (formerly the American Theatre). For tickets or more information, call (314) 276-8165. For more information, visit www.kevinklineawards.org.
