Mao Zedong and his place in Chinese history
Lau Guan Kim  Updated: 2004-03-10 09:24

Mao Zedong without any university degree became the learned poet and philosopher of guerrilla warfare and founder of New China

He had to do what must be done at that time, and the present leaders have to do what must be done in modern times.

The two conditions are different.

But remember, he planned and romanticised for China while he was on the run for fifteen years. And when it all ended in triumph for him, he set to build and realise the dream for a New China.

Mao Zedong built a New China from nothing except the people who believed in him. Like a normal human he had his fair share of foibles and frailties, but these are not sins against China.

To judge the great Mao Zedong, you must review his life and the overall benefits he brought to China. Then you come to the realisation that he did more good for China, and the short moment where he erred or might have erred could be understood and forgiven.

There is no denying Mao Zedong is a Chinese titan of the Twentieth Century.
