Flash本身有“闪光”的意思，可以引申为瞬间即逝的现象，因此这个短语常用来形容短暂不持久的功名和成就，就是我们常说的“昙花一现”。
从字面上看flash in the pan，有两种不同的理解方法：一种把flash in the pan解释为“淘金盆里的反光”，另一种解释为“枪盘上的火光”，这句话是比喻古老的手枪走火而射不出的现象。总之，这个短语的意思不外乎“空欢喜一场，好景不长”。凡是一个人或一件事情的发展上有先威而无后劲的便可以说那是flash in the pan了。
来看两个例句：
His brilliant novel turned out to be a flash in the pan; he never wrote another one.（他的这篇极为出色的小说竟是昙花一现，再没有能写出第二篇来。）
The singer was just another flash in the pan who dropped out of sight after one hit record.（那个歌手也是昙花一现，只出了一张流行唱片就默默无闻了。）
