Brand 除了“商标、牌子”的意思外，还有一个意思是：“烙印”，例如：These cattle have my brand on them.（这些牛身上打了烙印，标明是我的牛。）因此，brand-new的意思应该是“像新打成的铁器一样新”。英国大文豪莎士比亚笔下就多次出现fire new这个词，意思和brand-new没有区别。和brand的这个意思相关的成语还有：snatch a brand from the burning，意思是“釜底抽薪”。
