Plain sailing

李白在《行路难》里写到：“长风破浪会有时，直挂云帆济沧海。”中国人做什么事都希望一帆风顺。

英国人说容易、顺利时，也会用一个航海术语：plain sailing。 Plain做形容词一般解释为“简单的；清楚明白的；平常的”，似乎和sailing沾不上边，plain sailing这个词到底是怎么来的呢？

原来plain sailing本来的意思时plane sailing，即“平面航海术”。所谓“平面航海术”是指在平面地图上定方向测距离，而不是在圆形的地球仪上。这样，标绘航线就容易多了。所以，plane sailing渐渐就引申为“轻而易举”的意思了。又由于plane和plain同音，很多人不知道就这样以讹传讹，结果plane sailing就变成了plain sailing。

我们来看几个例句：

The road got busy when we started off but was plain sailing after a while.
我们出发时路上车很拥挤，但一会儿就畅通无阻了。

After we engaged a guide in the local village, everything was plain sailing.
当我们在当地雇到一个向导后，一切都顺利了。
