“遭破坏”或者“完蛋”，在英文中可以用go to pot来表达，go to pot按照字面上来解释，意思是“去锅里”，跟“完蛋”等有什么关系呢？
以下有两种解释：一种解释是：人们煮肉类或者其它食物时，一般都会先把它切碎，然后放进锅里，所以，go to pot有“被切碎，遭破坏”的意思。
另一种解释是：从前有一个裁缝，每逢看见送葬队伍从门口经过的时候，就会把一块石头放进锅里。最后，轮到别人给他送葬的时候，有人就说：He has gone to the pot.
无论哪一种解释是正确的，go to pot现在一般都不是用来指“切碎食物”或者“被别人送葬”了。Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English对go to pot的解释是这样的：to become ruined or worthless, esp. from lack of care（尤指因缺乏照管遭到破坏；完蛋）
例如：
The British Empire is going to pot.
大英帝国快要完蛋了。
He worked so hard that his health went to pot.
他工作过劳，结果牺牲了健康。
