Set the Thames on fire的意思是“作出惊人之举，取得非凡成就”(to do anything unusually successful)。

此外，法语中原有类似He'll never set the seine on fire.这样的说法。传入英国语言之后，人们用Thames代替了seine一词。He'll never set the Thames on fire.最初的含义为“默默无闻的人物；无所作为”。 后来，在人们运用语言的过程中，逐渐将其约定为现在这种动词词性的用法，其含义也被改变为“取得了惊人的成就，不同凡响”。
在美国，人们使用set the world on fire这一形式，但表达的含义相同。
