鸭子和鹅，走路的样子都不好看。北方话有“鸭践鹅行”形容走路样子难看。腿短的人走路，英语有以duck-legged形容的；而戏言短腿者时有：He has the duck's disease。害了鸭子病，是以腿短了。英语中之duck源于古英语作潜水解之duce，说明鸭和水关系密切。英国谚语有：Ducks fare well in the Thames。鸭子在泰晤士河中吃得好，比喻生活于幸福之中。美国谚语有as happy as ducks in Arizona。像鸭子在亚利桑那州那么幸福。这原是一句反话。亚利桑那以干旱见称，鸭子在那里何来幸福可言。
久居香港的李君，移民美国，遭遇欠佳：Mr Lee is happy as ducks in Arizona，颇为不幸。有句顺口溜：More rain, more rest; more water will suit the ducks best。雨多可以休息；水多鸭子最舒适。据说李君当时决定移民，是为了要改变一下生活，也就是：A duck cannot always dabble in the same gutter。鸭子不能总是在同一个水沟中浸水。此语常用以说明一个人为何要求变动。
