这种习俗在17世纪早期起源于法国，后来在英国也开始流行起来。不过在英国，戴假发要根据不同社会等级和职业而有所区别。为了和普通老百姓有所区别，那些重要人物戴的假发往往比一般人的假发要大得多，因此就被称为“big wigs”。所以，现在bigwig的意思也就是“a person of importance”。
