朋友Y的住所不大，多年前置业，六百多英尺面积。当时他自称蜗居，但实际上也算相当宽敞了。Y说日前听朋友M文绉绉地提到：The toilet has the need of repairing，自然地想到“蜗居”的浴厕也该修理了。他说：My toilet is also in need of repairing。朋友S说to have the need of... 和to be in need of... 意思一样，都是“需要……”或者“有……之必要”，前者是较旧的说法，显得文雅而有婉曲之感。后者比较“现代化”，现在普遍通用。to have... 和to be... 在许多表现方式中用以表现相同意思，但以to be... 较为通用。
