读过叶圣陶先生的童话集《稻草人》吗？知道“straw man”这个词在英文中有什么特殊的意思吗？

Straw man在当代的英语中最常见的意思是 “a weak or imaginary person, object, or issue set up in order to be triumphantly refuted”（假象的对手，很容易对付的敌人）。

Straw man的另一种常见的意思是 “a person whose only function is to cover the activities of another，a front”（幌子）。

这个词最初的词义“稻草人”出现在16世纪，而现在使用的这些修辞用法都是从19世纪后期才开始出现的。

近些年来，可能是出于“男女平等”，还出现了中性的“straw person”以及专指“不堪一击、外强中干”的女性的straw woman这个词。
