Knock back
我在宠物店买了一只小猫咪。猫咪毛茸茸的,十分可爱,所以我总忍不住要带它出去炫耀一番。
一次好友安琪拉看到我的爱猫,一边逗弄它,一边问我说:“This cutie must have knocked your back a lot!”我听了以后,以为安琪拉是说猫咪很淘气,会抓我的背,就回答说:“Not at all. This is a tender kitten.”
谁知安琪拉听了大笑,说道:“This cutie must have cost you a lot!”
安琪拉的话让我一头雾水,回家查过字典,才发现原来“knock back”这个片语是“花费”的意思。所以安琪拉原本是问我,买猫咪一定花了我不少钱,而不是说我的猫咪很调皮。
