A shower in a restaurant
记得刚到美国的时候,我勤工俭学,利用课余时间在学校旁边的一家餐馆打工,负责接电话和处理外卖。在最初的一两个月里,我那些书本学来的英语着实闹了不少笑话。
一天,我接到一个电话:“Do you have a room for shower?”我心想这个人真是奇怪,怎么到餐馆来洗澡呢?于是我回答说:“Our restrooms are big and comfortable, but they are not allowed for shower.”
后来我向朋友提起这件事,朋友哈哈大笑,解释到这里的 shower 不是指洗澡、淋浴,而是指(在某个特定的场合为某位女士举行的)送礼会,就是说他们想要一个比较安静的房间举办 baby shower(为庆贺刚刚成为母亲的人生了宝宝而举行的送礼会)或 bridal shower(新婚送礼会)。
