“Black sheep”败家子或害群之马的意思，不过黑色也有一些褒义的用法。例如“in the black”就是指“公司盈利”的意思。因为一般情况下公司的账簿上是用墨水的颜色来区分盈利和亏损的。亏损帐是用红色墨水书写的，也就是我们平时说的“赤字”(in the red)，而赚钱的商店就是“a store in the black”。
此外，还有些用法是把white和black放在一起的。例如：Your proposal sounds all right, but can I see it in black and white? （你的计划听起来挺好，我能看看书面材料吗？）
还有些人总是“see things on in black and white”，意思就是说这些人看问题非黑即白，过于绝对化。
