Bounce的原意是用力撞击某人或某物使其反弹。早在1387年，"beat and bounce" 就被广泛使用，并一直延续到16世纪。斯宾塞的Faerie Queene中就使用了这个短语: "And wilfully him throwing on the gras/ Did beat and bounse his head and brest full sore."
话说回来，bouncing baby boy 原来是指充满活力、不太安静，喜欢制造一点噪音的的宝宝，其暗含意思是说孩子非常健壮，不象体弱的孩子那样不怎么动弹。这个说法之所以沿用到今天，有如此强的生命力，大概是因为它的头韵押的太棒了（都以 "B" 开头）。托马斯-弗勒在他1662年所写的The History of the Worthies of England中也借用过这个说法: "...Elmeby...where this bouncing babe Bonner was born."
