Bounce的原意是用力撞击某人或某物使其反弹。早在1387年,"beat and bounce" 就被广泛使用,并一直延续到16世纪。斯宾塞的Faerie Queene中就使用了这个短语: "And wilfully him throwing on the gras/ Did beat and bounse his head and brest full sore."
话说回来,bouncing baby boy 原来是指充满活力、不太安静,喜欢制造一点噪音的的宝宝,其暗含意思是说孩子非常健壮,不象体弱的孩子那样不怎么动弹。这个说法之所以沿用到今天,有如此强的生命力,大概是因为它的头韵押的太棒了(都以 "B" 开头)。托马斯-弗勒在他1662年所写的The History of the Worthies of England中也借用过这个说法: "...Elmeby...where this bouncing babe Bonner was born."
