East Greenbelt of Guangzhou Takes Shape

Longtoushan Mountain Forest Park, dubbed as the "lung" of eastern Guangzhou, will complete its greening and waterscape projects in a month, according to source with Huangpu District, Guangzhou, capital of South China's Guangdong Province.

Longtoushan Mountain, the only forest park in Huangpu District, is located in the Miaotou Community, about 15-km far from Guangzhou downtown. It is famous for a mountain stream wriggling beautifully in shape of Chinese dragon.

The park is planned to cover 335 hectare, among which the area of afforestated land is 260 hectare, with forest-coverage rate reaching 75%.

Up to this July, over 146.67 hectare of mountain forest has been replanted here, most of which are Schima Superba against fire and eucalyptus against mosquitoes. Other famous species, say, redbud, Erythrina Indica Lam, Peacock-flower and White Jade Orchid Tree, etc. also help to beautify Longtou Mountain.

According to relative national standard, the forest's environmental condition is of A-level, and its Deciduous Forest area is with highest air quality within the forest.

Launched by Huangpu government, the project of Longtoushan Mountain Forest Park is expected to finish by August 2008, with some seven resorts and sites to be built, such as Mountaineering Resort in the west, Granite Stone Egg Site in the middle, Fulong Lake Entertainment Site in the South and Forest Resort in the east.

A large-scale Botanical Garden is also planned in the park as a base for universal education of science and environmental protection, which will introduce plants from all around the world that are suitable to grow here.

At present, projects like the front-gate square, the gate of the park as well as some other greenings are opened for bid.

The Longtoushan Mountain Forest Park Co. Ltd. is set up this January to undertake the routine management and tourism business items related to the park.

Situated in the southernmost part of Mainland China, Guangdong Province covers a total area of 178,000 sq.km. Most of the lands are hilly and mountainous, thus making it a province with a big forestry sector. Forestry land in Guangdong covers a total area of 10,831 million ha., of which 9.33 million ha. are forested lands. Urban "green rate" reaches 33.7%, with 7.14 sq.m. open green land per person.

Cities including Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Zhongshan and Huizhou and dozens of townships have been awarded nationally for their excellent performance in afforestation.

Most important greenbelt for Guangzhou - Baiyun Mountain
The real "Baiyun (White Cloud) Mountain", 7.5 kilometers north of Guangzhou's city proper in Baiyun District, consists of more than 30 peaks and covers an area of 28 square kilometers. It is one of Guangzhou's eight scenic spots and is historically a famous attraction of Guangzhou.
