An avalanche killed two people and stranded about 600 cars Friday on a mountain road linking northern and southern Tajikistan, an official said Friday.
The sliding snow buried two victims inside their car while they were traveling over the Anzob pass about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of the capital, Dushanbe, said Emergencies Ministry spokesman Dustmurod Zabirov.
Rescue workers were clearing the highway and evacuating stranded people, Zabirov said.
Mountains cover about 90 percent of the impoverished Central Asian country, and avalanches are common in winter and early spring.
