The first Chinese environmentally-friendly construction project competition kicked off Monday.

The State Environment Protection Administration of China says only those constructions examined and approved by the environment department at city level before July 31 this year are qualified to take part in the appraisal competition, and be no more than three years old.

Appraisers will consider whether the buildings have harmed the environment of nature reserves and cultural relics, and if construction work made nearby residences suffer with excess noise and air pollution.

For those who win the competition, a group of environmental protection college volunteers will continue to keep eyes on them.

Deputy director general of Environment Protection Administration,Pan Yue said the event will be held every two years and the government will reward those construction projects good at protecting the environment.
