China's short message service volume surges 40% in Jan-May

Short message service volume in China recorded strong growth of nearly 40 per cent in the first five months of this year, according to latest data released by the Ministry of Information Industry (MII).
In January-May, more than 114.78 billion short messages were sent via mobile phones, up 39.6 per cent year on year.
This means that every mobile phone user sent 64 short messages every month on average on a mobile phone customer base of 358 million by the end of May.
An MII official said value added services via mobile phones will continue to grow quickly, particularly when the 3G era arrives.
MII statistics also show that the number of phone subscribers in China reached a record of 692 million at the end of May, with a net rise of 44.778 million in the first five months this year, of which the number of mobile phone subscribers rose 23.724 million to 358 million.
Internet broadband access users increased 5.33 million in the five months.
The ministry said that in the first five months of the year, China's total revenue of post and telecommunications reached 256.11 billion yuan (US$30.94 billion), up 10.5 per cent over the same period last year.
Postal revenue was 23.29 billion yuan, a rise of 6.3 per cent year-on-year, and the telecom revenue hit 232.81 billion yuan, up 10.9 per cent year-on-year.
