East China's Shandong government is investing more in coalmine safety.

In recent years, Shandong has increased by 40 percent the amount spent on coalmine safety annually and also improved coal production efficiency.

Shandong coalmines with an output of more than one million tons are reported to have one of the lowest death rates in China.

The local government also shut down small coalmines with low productivity and unsafe working conditions.
