In a park behind the Potala Palace on a small island stands Lukhang Temkple-one of the best known gardens in Lhasa. In the middle of the garden is the Dragon King Pool, built during the reign of the Sixth Dalai Lama Tsangyang Gyatso, its original pit having been formed earlier, during the rule of the Fifth Dala Lama Lozang Gyatso, from earth dug up to construct the Potala Palace.

The history of the Lukhang Temple is as long as that of the Potala Palace. It is the favored place of worship among Lhasa residents. Young people go there on dates, seniors to take leisurely strolls, and children to play. It is beautiful throughout the four seasons.
